Opening Reception July 21 starting at 18h going till Midnight; exhibit runs thru September 21
SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, U.S. – Scott Mc Kiernan, founder of the photo agency ZUMA Press and the Kona Gallery and Photojournalism Center here, today announced that the gallery has just mounted an exhilarating new exhibition of vintage auto racing photos by legendary photographer Al Satterwhite.
Come one and all and celebrate racing season at a FREE event at The KONA Gallery and Photojournalism Center. Free food, music and libations as well as a raffle with lots of great items.
The exhibition, THE RACERS, which brings visitors up close to over 50 prints of vintage photographs made between 1963 and 1985, will be celebrated with an opening night gala evening reception Saturday, July 21, which Satterwhite will attend.
Al said about his body of work and show: “………. the 60s & 70s was a time of great change in endurance racing; we didn’t realize it at the time, but looking back at my images from that period, I can see it developing. I wanted to share this with all of the race fans who were there and the new fans who can only read about it ……Kona Gallery seemed like the place to launch the show, as they are real innovators and are willing to put it out there for all to see….. an amazing space of possibilities!”
Satterwhite’s work as a professional photographer began in Florida in the late sixties, where he covered news for the St. Petersburg Times until he became the official photographer of the State’s Governor. In the 70s and 80s, from home bases in both New York and Los Angeles, Satterwhite took a slew of editorial and advertising assignments that sent him all over the world and put before his lens such icons as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali, Lauren Hutton, Hunter S. Thompson, Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.
Shots of those last two speed demons pepper THE RACERS, not to mention photos of such racing icons as Carl Shelby, Graham Hill and Pedro Rodriquez. Which focuses on Satterwhite’s work capturing the high-octane action on such speedways as Daytona and Sebring.
The 1960s and 1970s was a magical era of innovation and endurance at Sebring and Daytona race tracks. Photographer and Nikon legend Al Satterwhite was there covering these races for major magazines and as a fan.
As and added bonus his unprecedented collection of images of the races, the cars, the drivers and behind-the-scenes poignant moments are also available in his latest fine art collector edition book, “the Racers”. The exquisite 100-page layout is a must-have limited-edition for serious racing collectors. It’s a limited edition of 100 books using the new ‘lay-flat’ technology that makes the many 2-page spreads look fantastic with no gutter to ruin the viewing experience. It comes in a custom laser-etched black aluminum box with (2) 8×10 archival prints; the book and the prints are all numbered and signed. Offered by The Kona Gallery, for a limited time at $750. Go online at http://www.TheKonaGallery.com to purchase books or prints.
Al’s work can also be seen in major museums, galleries and private collections around the world.
THE RACERS will be on display at Scott Mc Kiernan’s Kona Gallery and Photojournalism Center, 412 North El Camino Real, San Clemente, CA 92672, through September 21, 2012. Hours are 10am-6pm seven days a week. Tel. (949) 481-3747
