SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, U.S.–– The Kona Gallery is honored to host a lecture, by world class picture editor, JIM COLTON. Colton will speak as a part of this month’s Big Wednesday Lecture Series. Join us at The KONA Gallery and Photojournalism Center at 412 North El Camino Real, San Clemente, California, U.S. 92672 on Tuesday April 23th starting at 7 PM, for what will be an amazing presentation and sure to spark interesting discussion afterwards!
Jim Colton (Former Director of Photography for Newsweek and Photography Editor for Sports Illustrated)
This presentation will highlight the recent Summer Olympics in London as well as published photographs appearing in the Leading Off section of Sports Illustrated. The lecture will examine the logistics of covering an Olympics, picture editing and the use of imagery in print and on-line. It will also discuss the changes in the publishing world as photographers seek new avenues for their images. An extended question and answer period will follow the presentation.
The program will be in four parts:
• Part One will bea brief discussion on how digital media has changed how we cover events andpublish photography using a brief history of the transition from analog to digital.
• Part Two is a look at the historic frame by frame sequence of Phelp’s 100 meter butterfly win in the Beijing Olympics followed by a brief discussion on coverage and a presentation of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
• Part Three is a presentation of some of the greatest sports images that have graced the pages of Leading Off — Sports Illustrated‘s weekly three spread gallery.
Part Four will be an extended Q&A about all of the presentation subjects as well as a look towards the future of photography utilizing print, online, tablets, web and apps.

JAMES K. COLTON
James K. Colton recently left Sports Illustrated after 15 years as their Photography Editor and is currently a writer and educator. He began his career in 1972 at the Associated Press. Five years later he joined Newsweek and became their Director of Photography. He was the Jury Chairman for the World Press Photo contest in 2005, received an International Photography Awards “Lucie” for Picture Editor of the Year in 2007, was the recipient of the “Focus” award for Lifetime Achievement by the Griffin Museum in 2010 and has been acknowledged as one of the 100 most important people in photography by American Photo.
THE KONA GALLERYAND PHOTOJOURNALISM CENTER––Unveiled on October 7, 2009 by photojournalist and entrepreneur, Scott Mc Kiernan, The KONA Gallery is a space dedicated to the presentation and discourse of photojournalism. The vision of The KONA Gallery has been to expose a broad audience to moving historical moments through the lens of acclaimedphotographers. The center will be holding exhibits in its’ two galleries, monthly lecture series in the BIG WEDNESDAY Gallery, workshops throughout the year long with other educational presentations.
