Fitzgerald, GA Sept 2018 a small southern town surrounded by farmland. Until recently, the town had no form of public transportation. That made getting around to doctor appointments, therapy, shopping and life in general difficult for elderly, low-income residents, and and those with developmental or physicals disabilities who had no means of getting around.
A group of area residents with disabilities, called People First of Fitzgerald, organized a community-wide effort to establish a few vans that could be available to transport residents where they needed to go. The effort was successful and the county now has six vans, with paid drivers, and is self-sustaining.
