Fiesta de San Fermín is held annually in Pamplona, Spain, honoring the city’s patron, Saint Fermín. The best-known part of the festival is the running of the bulls, or the encierro. Thrill seekers take part as the bulls are run through the streets. People regularly suffer injuries, a frequent feature of the spectacle. Both locals and tourists participate in the event, made famous in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel ‘The Sun Also Rises.’ The bulls that run each morning are killed in the afternoon by professional bullfighters. Animal rights activists annually campaign against the festival. Although legal in Spain, some Spanish cities have outlawed the practice of bullfighting, and only a few countries throughout the world still allow this practice.
