July 17, 2024, Elkton, Oregon, USA: A colony of small ants march across gravel on the side of a county road near Elkton in southwestern Oregon. The thousands of individual ants had cleared a pathway for the colony on the move. According to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2022, there are about 20 quadrillion ants on planet earth. The total weight of the 20 quadrillion ants is approximately 12 megatons.
