He was 88. After decades of conservative leadership, Francis tried to reset the course of the Roman Catholic Church, emphasizing inclusion and care for the marginalized over adherence to doctrinal purity within the church. On Easter Sunday, the day before his death, Francis appeared in his wheelchair to bless the faithful in St. Peter’s Square.
