July 29, 2025, Uriumghat, Assam, India: The Assam government has launched a large-scale eviction drive targeting illegal encroachments, particularly in the Rengma Reserve Forest near Uriamghat, along the Nagaland border. As part of this operation, around 11,000 bighas (approximately 3,600 acres) of land are being cleared. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration is cracking down on land encroachment by illegal migrants. To carry out the operation, about 700 to 800 personnel from the police force, Forest Department, and CRPF have been deployed in the area. Bulldozers and excavators are also being used to support the clearance efforts.
