Scott Mc Kiernan Presents zReportage.com Issue #968 Story of the Week: Published: TUESDAY December 17, 2024: ‘INTERVENTION: Haiti’s Growing Chaos’ by ZUMA Press photographer in Haiti Patrice Noel: Last week 184 people were killed in the Haitian capital, as Port-au-Prince was rocked by a spike in gang violence that pushed the death toll from Haiti’s spiraling security crisis to at least 5,000. Attempts by the Kenya led Multinational Security Mission to quell the violence have so far failed. The international force arrived in Haiti in June to bolster the Haitian National Police but is underfunded and lacks the necessary equipment to take on the heavily armed gangs. Meanwhile, the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) the body created to organize elections and re-establish order, appears to be in turmoil. The TPC replaced the interim prime minister last month and has made little progress. It remains to be seen if Caribbean leaders can salvage Haiti’s transition and help get the country back on the road to organizing free and fair elections. Scott Mc Kiernan Presents zReportage.com Issue #967 Story of the Week: Published TUESDAY December 10, 2024: ‘LAST DAYS: Assad Regime Falls’ by ZUMA Partner agency dpa photo-journalist Anas Alkharboutli: Syrian opposition forces took Damascus early on Sunday, ending the al-Assad family’s 50-year reign in a surprise offensive that reached the capital in only 12 days. The offensive began on November 27, when opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched an assault from their base in the Idlib governorate in northwestern Syria and then rolled on southwards to unseat Bashar al-Assad. This weeks zReportage is dedicated to the memory of Damascus born award winning photojournalist, Anas Al-Kharbouti. At approximately 10:00AM December 4th, near the town of Morel in the northern Hama countryside, while on assignment for DPA, he and a group of journalists were targeted by a Syrian airstrike and Anas was killed. ZUMA is sad to report that photojournalist ANAS ALKHARBOUTLI was killed on December 4, 2024 in an airstrike on Morek, near the city of Hama, Syria. Alkharboutli was covering the rebel offensive, according to his employer the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA). Alkharboutli’s work was featured in many zReportage issues, as recent as last week.
