July 17, 2024, Elkton, Oregon, USA: A colony of small ants march across gravel on the side of a county road near Elkton in southwestern Oregon. The thousands of individual ants had cleared a pathway for the colony on the move. According to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2022, there are about 20 quadrillion ants on planet earth. The total weight of the 20 quadrillion ants is approximately 12 megatons.

July 18, 2024, Bahaddarhat, Chittagong, Bangladesh: As part of their earlier announced total strike across Bangladesh, quota reform activists staged a blockade at Bahaddarhat in Chittagong. At that time, the police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the students. Clashes ensued with both sides pelting bricks and chasing each other. Several people from both sides were injured in the incident. In this incident, including the police, more than half a hundred were injured. Nine people have been killed in this movement across the country today.

Gang violence on average killed or injured more than one person per hour in the first three months of this year, according to UN data. Close to 600,000 Haitians have been forced from their homes, according to the UN’s migration agency. The most recent widespread outbreak of gang violence has been fueled by the assassination of President Moise on 7 July 2021. The president was shot dead by a group of Colombian mercenaries at his home outside of Port-au-Prince after he had started denouncing ”dark forces” inside Haiti. Eighty percent of the capital is now estimated to be under gang control and the people living in these areas face ”inhuman” levels of violence. Several hundred Kenyan police officers have deployed to this Caribbean nation, the first members of a UN backed mission to beat back the militia’s that control the capital, but for now Haiti’s gangs are unperturbed.
