German soldiers from the Wachbataillon took part in the nighttime “Bollwerk Baerlin III” exercise at Jungfernheide U-Bahn station in Berlin on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The large-scale drill trained troops to fight in confined underground spaces, clear subway cars, evacuate casualties, and respond to simulated saboteur attacks. The Bundeswehr says the exercise reflects Germany’s renewed focus on national and alliance defense amid rising security tensions in Europe following Russia’s war against Ukraine. The unit, best known for its ceremonial duties, is expanding its infantry capabilities to protect federal government infrastructure in a crisis.
