March 10, 2008 – Lagoa Azul 2, Amazonas, Brazil – Amazon Indian tribe called Sater-mau battle local police over a land disbute. Five-months pregnant, Mani Sater, 21, with her one-year old on her hip, tries to stop the advance of Amazonas state policemen who were expelling the woman from a privately-owned tract of land on the outskirts of Manaus, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. Her husband and 400 other tribe members were squatting on land in a rural sector between the cities of Itacoatiara and Manaus. The property owner, a Japanese citizen, asked the police to intervene in removing the squaters. The landless peasants tried in vain to resist the eviction using bows and arrows against police using tear gas and trained dogs.
