The wildfires on Rhodes, spurred by a sweltering heat wave, triggered a huge evacuation of residents and tourists on the island last weekend as forests burned for a week. Fires have been raging across Greece, including outside the capital Athens and in Rhodes, fueled by three consecutive heat waves. Five people have died, including two firefighter pilots. Temperatures pushed 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Climate change is making the world hotter and is charged this year by the natural and cyclical El Nino event, which warms the Pacific. The Mediterranean region has withered under record-breaking temperatures. July is the hottest month globally ever recorded, and it’s likely 2023 will be the hottest year. Welcome to ‘Paradise LOST’

June 25, 2023, Moscow, Russian Federation: A person (C-R, rear), seen through a gate, walks in the blocked Red Square. Moscow’s Red Square remained closed on the day after security in the city was tightened. On 24 June, counter-terrorism measures were enforced in Moscow and other Russian regions after private military company (PMC) Wagner Group’s chief claimed that his troops had occupied the building of the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don, demanding a meeting with Russia’s defense chiefs. Belarusian President Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin, negotiated a deal with Wagner Chief Prigozhin to stop the movement of the group’s fighters across Russia, the press service of the President of Belarus reported. The negotiations were said to have lasted for the entire day. Prigozhin announced that Wagner fighters were turning their columns around and going back in the other direction, returning to their field camps. (Credit Image: © Maxim Shipenkov/EFE via ZUMA Press)

1970 – London, England, UK – The Beatles member JOHN LENNON and his wife YOKO ONO. Knowing their March 20, 1969 marriage would be a huge press event, John and Yoko decided to use the publicity to promote world peace. Lennon and Ono often combined advocacy with performance art, as in their ”Bagism” introduced during a Vienna press conference. Lennon detailed this period in the Beatles’ song ”The Ballad of John and Yoko”. (Credit Image: © Keystone Pressedienst/ZUMA Press)

Scott Mc Kiernan Presents zReportage.com Story of the Week #898: TUESDAY July 25, 2023: ‘Is Ukraine’s Counteroffensive On Hold?’ by ZUMA Press photo-journalist Madeleine Kelly

Ukraine’s counter-offensive against Russia’s invasion will soon enter its eighth week. It has already liberated more ground than Russia captured during its months long offensive, which took the eastern town of Bakhmut. The majority of Ukraine’s brigades remain intact and uncommitted. But progress has been slower and harder than expected, ending any hopes of an early breakthrough. According to recently a leaked German intelligence assessment, Ukraine is not fully implementing the training it has received from the West. Ukraine’s offensive has devolved into a protracted war of attrition, which could continue into the fall. Welcome to ‘Is Ukraine’s Counteroffensive On Hold?’
