June 25, 2023, Moscow, Russian Federation: A person (C-R, rear), seen through a gate, walks in the blocked Red Square. Moscow’s Red Square remained closed on the day after security in the city was tightened. On 24 June, counter-terrorism measures were enforced in Moscow and other Russian regions after private military company (PMC) Wagner Group’s chief claimed that his troops had occupied the building of the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don, demanding a meeting with Russia’s defense chiefs. Belarusian President Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin, negotiated a deal with Wagner Chief Prigozhin to stop the movement of the group’s fighters across Russia, the press service of the President of Belarus reported. The negotiations were said to have lasted for the entire day. Prigozhin announced that Wagner fighters were turning their columns around and going back in the other direction, returning to their field camps. (Credit Image: © Maxim Shipenkov/EFE via ZUMA Press)

Ukraine’s counter-offensive against Russia’s invasion will soon enter its eighth week. It has already liberated more ground than Russia captured during its months long offensive, which took the eastern town of Bakhmut. The majority of Ukraine’s brigades remain intact and uncommitted. But progress has been slower and harder than expected, ending any hopes of an early breakthrough. According to recently a leaked German intelligence assessment, Ukraine is not fully implementing the training it has received from the West. Ukraine’s offensive has devolved into a protracted war of attrition, which could continue into the fall. Welcome to ‘Is Ukraine’s Counteroffensive On Hold?’

Orlando Santillanes, 42, holds his dog, Coqueta, as he sits inside the broken-down vehicle he has been living in for the past six months parked underneath Interstate 40 near Downtown Albuquerque. New Mexico has seen almost a 50 percent increase in the homeless population in the last year. A report given to lawmakers on the Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) outlines the lack of affordable housing as the state’s homeless population surges. ‘We do not have enough affordable housing to systematically move people out of homelessness,’ LFC program evaluator Kathleen Gygi said.
