zReportage.com Story of the Week #817: TUESDAY December 7, 2021: ‘Belarus Migration Game’ from ZUMA Press photographers Sergei Bobylev, Maxim Guchek, Oksana Manchuk, Ramil Nasibulin and Leonid Shcheglov of TASS: The situation at the Belarus-Poland border is unlike recent immigration crises. The European Commission has accused Belarus of luring migrants to Minsk with the false promise of easy entry to the EU. Belarus’s leader Lukashenko denies orchestrating the problem. Migrants have described how Belarusian authorities seized their phones and pushed them towards the border fence. International law states that anyone seeking protection must be given access to the asylum process. Many people in Belarus and Poland left Iraq and Syria seeking economic opportunity – they would not qualify for asylum and human rights groups have accused the EU of ignoring what is happening on the ground. The main flash point of the crisis was defused last month after the Belarusian authorities moved thousands of migrants from a sprawling encampment near the Polish border, yet thousands remain stranded under freezing temperatures, and at least 12 people have died. The migrant crisis in Belarus is a window into the failure of today’s global order to solve a growing problem. Welcome to ‘Belarus Migration Game’

Story of the Week #816: TUESDAY November 30, 2021: ‘LAVA LANDí by ZUMA Press award winning photographer Kike Rincon of Contacto, who is currently in The Canary Islands covering this magnificent and dangerous volcanic event: The 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption began September 19, 2021 at 15:12 local time, as a flank eruption at the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge comprising the southern half of the Spanish island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. It is the first volcanic eruption on the island since the eruption of TeneguÌa in 1971. The lava stream has engulfed 2,800 acres of land and the eruption has damaged or destroyed nearly 2,700 buildings, forcing the evacuation of thousands from their homes. The volcano was under strict surveillance after more than 22,000 tremors were reported in one week, an indication of a pending eruption, which continues today with new lava vents opening up. The volcanic action has also become a tourist attraction. People have flocked to La Palma to watch the bright red flames as they shoot hundreds of feet into the sky.
