May 12, 2021, Lod, Israel: Jewish youth cleanup and salvage religious articles in a torched synagogue as debris and torched vehicles litter the streets of the mixed Jewish Arab city of Lod following a night of Arab rioting against Jews throughout the country in a show of support for Hamas amid Israel’s Guardian of the Walls military operation in Gaza. The military conflict, now in it’s 3rd day, began following a salvo of rockets fired by Gaza’s Hamas terror group towards Jerusalem. Israeli government has declared a state of special emergency in Lod bestowing extended authority to the police.

Story of the Week #786: TUESDAY May 11, 2021: ‘BROKEN BORDER’ by Pulitzer Prize winning ZUMA Photographer Carol Guzy who spent several nights with Texas Rangers on the US-Mexico border covering this story: As darkness falls on the Rio Grande river, Texas Rangers watch with night vision goggles for inflatable rafts crossing the river from Mexico. The night is about to get busy. Soon rafts drop off asylum-seekers onto United States soil, including many families with young children and some even traveling alone. Roma, a town of 10,000 people in the Rio Grande Valley, is the latest epicenter of illegal crossings, where growing numbers of families and children are entering the United States to seek asylum. U.S. authorities reported more than 100,000 encounters on the southern border in February, the highest surge since 2019. At the end of march over 16,000 unaccompanied children were in government custody, including about 5,000 in substandard U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities. A surge of migrants arriving at the Texas-Mexico border has pushed the country’s immigration system to the breaking point as new policies aimed at both undocumented immigrants and legal asylum seekers have contributed to a humanitarian crisis. Welcome to ‘BROKEN BORDER’

Image: TAKE A KNEE: June 1, 2020, Boca Raton, Florida, USA: Florida Highway Patrol Captain ROGER REYES, 49, takes a knee with demonstrator VELL REMY, who is holding a ‘No Justice, No Peace’ sign in the middle of the road, that was shut down to prevent the marchers from going on to Interstate 95. 200+ people protesting the death of Floyd during an arrest, marched eastbound on Glades Road, intent on taking their demonstration onto the highway. On the other side stood dozens of Florida Highway Patrol troopers, dressed in riot gear and just as intent on keeping the protest from moving. Similar scenarios around the country have devolved into pitched battles between law enforcement and protesters, resulting in arrests, injuries and further chaos. Monday night Reyes opted for conversation and compassion. Taking a knee alongside the protesters to show ‘respect for their demonstration and the cause they believe in.’ ‘Respect and humanity is what it’s all about,’ said Reyes.

Story of the Week #785: TUESDAY May 4, 2021: ‘PANDEMIC ISOLATION’ by award winning ZUMA Photographer Rick D’Elia who has worked with NGO’s worldwide: The coronavirus pandemic is causing an epidemic of loneliness and social isolation among adults, carrying with it significant health and emotional risks, according to the United Health Foundation. Arizona based ZUMA photojournalist, Rick D’Elia felt the need to begin to record this extraordinary time to show what life looks like during the pandemic, with its barriers of physical distance, including 10 feet or more, masks and sometimes glass windows. Rick captured simple moments of families and individuals, largely at home, while coping with these new seemingly harsh and isolating rules. The images became his way of coping and, perhaps, understanding how to process this unusual time. As we begin emerging from this unprecedented event, people are going outside, relaxing and playing more, looking for the end of the crisis, looking for a release, looking for something to celebrate. Welcome to ‘PANDEMIC ISOLATION’
