zReportage.com Story of the Week #771: TUESDAY January 26, 2021: ‘Lucha Libre Lives’ from ZUMA Press award winning photographer Michael Francis McElroy: One of Mexico’s cultural traditions has been hit as hard by the coronavirus pandemic, ”lucha libre” wrestling. The death toll for wrestlers has risen significantly recently and wrestling arenas are closed, putting practically everyone out of work. One group of young wrestlers, called the Olivares Dynasty, who live in Mexico City’s Xochimilco borough, have put up an makeshift training ring on one of the areas famous ”floating gardens.” These wrestlers now make their living selling flowers that they grow on their families artificial island, known as a ‘chinampas.’ Welcome to ‘Lucha Libre Lives.’

October 26, 2019, San Diego, California, U.S: Two steel fences at the border between the United States and Mexico snake over a hill just east of Border Field State Park in California. The area between the fences is a ”no man’s land” patrolled by the United States Border Patrol. Mexico is to the far right. Border Field State Park is on the Pacific coast where the fence ends several yards into the ocean and is considered the southwestern corner of the continental United States.

zReportage.com Story of the Week #770: TUESDAY January 19, 2021: ‘TIBER MONSTERS’ from ZUMA Press award winning photographer Luigi Avantaggiato: The ‘wels’ catfish (Silurus glanis), a large species found in the freshwater rivers and lakes of Europe, from the United Kingdom, all the way east in Kazakhstan. After the beluga sturgeon, it’s the largest known species of freshwater fish, thought to grow up to 4 meters long and up to 800 pounds. The catfish was introduced illegally in Italy in the 1950s and this invasive species is destroying the biodiversity of Italian river waters. To catch them you need a lot of physical strength and also a lot of patience. The largest specimens can live up to 80 years and are called ”Tiber Monsters” by Italy’s giant catfish hunters. Welcome to: ‘TIBER MONSTERS’

zReportage.com Story of the Week #769: TUESDAY January 12, 2021: ‘SYRIA’S COVID-19 CATASTROPHE’ from ZUMA Press award winning photographer Anas Alkharboutli of DPA who won the 27th Prix Bayeux Calvados-Normandy War Correspondents Award 2020 for his work in Syria: COVID-19 has been shrouded in secrecy in Syria and official numbers have been consistently low due to the general lack of testing. After months of under reported cases and relaxed lockdown measures, the rapidly spreading COVID-19 pandemic has gripped government held areas. A worrying rise in daily deaths and infections, especially in Damascus, has left Syria facing what could be its biggest challenge yet. For a country battling economic turmoil, widespread instability, and heavy sanctions, the outcome looks increasingly bleak. Welcome to: ‘SYRIA’S COVID-19 CATASTROPHE’
