zReportage.com Story of the Week #776: TUESDAY March 2, 2021: ‘DEEP FREEZE’ from ZUMA Press award winning San Antonio Express-News photographers, Billy Calzada, Jessica Phelps, Lisa Krantz, Wiliam Luther and Kin Man Huia: When a winter storm caused by a disruption in the polar vortex and sent temperatures to sub-freezing, critical utility services buckled under record demand. Meteorologists call this recent polar vortex that targeted Texas one of the biggest, nastiest and longest-lasting ones they’ve seen since vortex monitoring began the 50’s. A humanitarian crisis escalated within hours of the first power outage. Thousands of Texans are facing damage from burst pipes, which have flooded homes and left many without water. 14.9 million Texans faced water disruptions. Seven board members of the Texas grid operator have resigned in the wake of blackouts that hit the state during the storm that left more than 4 million Texans in the dark for days due to power supply shortages. A family whose son died during an extended power outage is suing its electricity provider and the agency that oversees most of Texas’ energy grid. The winter storm that left dozens of Texans dead, millions without power and nearly 15 million with water issues could be the costliest disaster in Texas state history. Welcome to: ‘DEEP FREEZE’

January 23, 2021, Racine, Wisconsin, USA: Several dozen people, many without masks, who want the Racine (Wisconsin) Unified School District to resume in-person learning rally in downtown Racine Saturday January 23, 2021. The district has been virtual all year. Teachers were ordered out of their buildings in November by the city health department because of surging infection numbers, but teachers are being told to be back in their buildings for virtual learning beginning Monday January 25. No decision has been made about if and when students will return to classes this school year. Teachers rallied and had a car caravan an hour earlier opposing reopening schools until they are vaccinated and assured of their health in school buildings.

zReportage.com Story of the Week #775: TUESDAY February 23, 2021: ‘ATONEMENT: Magh Mela Pilgrimage’ from ZUMA Press award winning photographer Prabhat Kumar Verma, who covers social issues and events across India: The major religious events in India are marked by famous fairs. The scope and size of these can be anything from a few days at a local deity’s shrine to mass gatherings of millions of devotees lasting months. The fairs of Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela are two examples. The religious basis for the Magh Mela is the belief that pilgrimage is a means for atonement, or penance for past mistakes. Hindu mythology considers the origin of the festival to be associated with the beginning of the Universe. The event brings millions of pilgrims to the ghats of Prayagraj every year. Although the mega event of Kumbh has become world famous, what does not get as much attention is the Magh Mela. Legends have it that the tradition of Magh Mela began after Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, performed a sacred sacrifice at Sangam, the confluence of three holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sarawati in Prayagraj. To ensure the tradition is carried on, locals started holding the annual fair of Magh Mela. Even today, pilgrims believe the mela is a reminder of the creation of the universe by Brahma and a celebration of life. Welcome to: ‘ATONEMENT: Magh Mela Pilgrimage’
