Apr 20, 2010 – Bedford, Massachusetts, USA – Human brains in a laboratory at the Bedford Veterans Administration Medical Center, repository for the Brain Bank, where the pathology of concussive head trauma in ex-athletes is being studied by noted neurology researcher, Dr. Ann McKee. More than 250 former and current athletes, including 60 retired NFL players, have pledged to donate their brains and spinal cord tissue to Boston University’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy through the rapidly growing Brain Donation Registry. Researchers hope to glean from their work a better understanding of the effects of repeated head trauma on the nervous system and to develop strategies for prevention, treatment and, ultimately, a cure.
