July 6, 2020, Buenos Aires, Federal Capital, Argentina: Falling rates in economic activity, a rampant deficit and a feared escalation in unemployment and poverty rates reveal how the health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic shakes the foundations of the already weak Argentine economy. The arrival of the Covid-19 prompted the Alberto Fernü¡ndez government to adopt strict measures of social isolation at the end of March, which paralyzed the economy in April and, although the restrictions relaxed somewhat in May and June. In July they tightened again, especially in Buenos Aires and its periphery, where most of the country’s economic activity is concentrated..It is estimated that around 1,400,000 jobs have been lost since Social, Preventive and Mandatory Isolation was decreed, which produced a lethal economic paralysis.
