Story of the Week: #802, Launched TUESDAY September 21, 2021: ‘DANCING IN THE RUBBLE: ‘IF THERE IS LIFE, THERE IS HOPE’ by all time photography Pulitzer Prize Winner: ZUMA Press Wire’s Star Photojournalist and Story Teller, CAROL GUZY. Guzy received her fourth Pulitzer for her searing coverage of the Haitian 2010 earthquake. August 14, 2021, local time 9:30:09, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Tiburon Peninsula in the Caribbean nation of Haiti. It had a 10-km-deep hypocenter near Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, approximately 90 miles west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. ZUMA sent Guzy to quake’s epicenter: Village of Maniche, population of 22K commune in the Les Cayes Arrondissement, in the Sud department of Haiti. Quake had killed at least a confirmed 2,248 and injuring 13K+, leaving the Caribbean Island nation in the grip of yet another humanitarian crisis. On good days, life is desperate. Tragedy befalls the country repeatedly. Political anarchy, gang violence, natural disasters and endless floods. 2010 epic quake killed over 300K. Decade later the island country still hadn’t recovered when the earth trembled again and life for so many was again eternally altered. Yet for most Haitians it’s not about dying in the quake but rather living in the rubble of shattered lives and altered destinies where their legendary resilience manifests. They mourn, pray then move on with the task of living. The town of Maniche is a teeth-rattling bumpy drive from Les Cayes where approximately 90% of buildings were destroyed or damaged. Yet hope endures in the wounded landscape. Welcome to: ‘DANCING IN THE RUBBLE’ a Five Part Series: Part ONE: Wake, Funeral. Part TWO: HOME. Part THREE: Helping Hands. Part FOUR: Wounded, Not Broken. Part FIVE: Eternal Faith! A visualist masterpiece by the one and the only: ZUMA Press’s CAROL GUZY.
