Atlanta-based ZUMA Press photojournalist Robin Rayne’s documentary Unmet: North Carolina’s Disability Crisis was released for distribution to ZUMA clients in December, 2022 and has already garnered national acclaim from disability rights advocates. “The film reveals the tragic shortage of direct support professionals in our state that often leaves people with serious disabilities in crisis,” notes Virginia Knowlton Marcus, CEO of Disability Rights North Carolina. “This film is an intimate look at the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ‘Unmet’ needs to be seen by legislators and policy makers as well as the general public. It is a powerful film that will open eyes and leave viewers demanding change.”
While Robin’s film focuses on North Carolina, the shortage of in-home caregivers, years-long wait lists for Medicaid funding, and low wages for those who provide support is national in scope, she said.
