April 14, 2023, New Clark City, The Philippines: Filipino Army soldiers fire an artillery shells using self-propelled artillery vehicles during a combined field artillery live fire exercise as part of the US-Philippines Balikatan military exercises. The annual Balikatan – meaning Shoulder-to-Shoulder in Tagalog – drills joined by American and Filipino troops this year are said to be the largest one ever amid growing instability in the Indo-Pacific region. It comes days after tensions in the Taiwan Strait significantly intensified following a series of military exercises held by China in response to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s meetings with U.S. officials.
