June 5, 2025, Elkton, Oregon, USA: A days-old black-tailed deer fawn lies hidden in the grass of a pasture along a country road near Elkton in rural southwestern Oregon. Its mother, foraging nearby, had temporarily ‘cached’ the fawn—a common behavior in which does leave their young concealed and motionless to avoid attracting predators. Newborn fawns have very little scent and rely on their spotted coats and stillness for camouflage during these vulnerable first weeks.
