March 3, 2026, Seattle, Washington, USA: World Wildlife Day 2026 was celebrated at Woodland Park Zoo, where Juniper, a Coastal Alaskan Brown Bear (Ursus arctos gyas), and Fern, a Montana Grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis), made appearances. Their long winter rest is ending. As they wake from torpor, it takes them weeks to fully adjust. They move slowly as they stretch, walk, and climb, almost as if in slow motion. The bears are getting used to their surroundings again and noticing what has changed over the winter. They look slimmer, having lost 15 to 30 percent of their weight.
