July 4, 2019, Ridgecrest, California, USA: Two people cross over a crack on the road of Hwy 178 east of Ridgecrest after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Thursday morning in the Mojave Desert’s Seamless Valley on the Fourth of July. People throughout Southern California reported feeling the powerful 10:33 a.m. quake, whose epicenter was located about 62 miles north-northwest of Barstow, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The San Bernardino County Fire Department said multiple buildings in its jurisdiction sustained minor cracks, multiple water mains ruptured, and several power lines were down.

June 21, 2020, Sleman, YOGYAKARTA SPECIAL REGION, INDONESIA: Black ash smoke and hot gas from Mount Merapi soared into the sky as high as 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). Mount Merapi, with an altitude of 2,968 meters in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, erupted ash and hot gas into the air accompanied by a roar that was heard up to 12 kilometers from the summit of Mount Merapi. This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 75 mm and 5 minutes and 28 seconds duration.
