April 15, 2026, Seattle, Washington, USA: Mexican Gray Wolves (Canis lupus baileyi) rest on a rock at Woodland Park Zoo. The species, also known as ”lobos,” remains one of the most endangered mammals in North America, with a wild population of fewer than 300 individuals in the United States. Conservation efforts reached a major milestone this month with the historic release of eight wolves into their ancestral habitat in Durango, Mexico, the first time the species has roamed the region since the 1970s. Meanwhile, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs recently vetoed HB 2787, a bill that would have prohibited state agencies from cooperating with federal recovery programs for the subspecies. March 3, 2026, Seattle, Washington, USA: World Wildlife Day 2026 was celebrated at Woodland Park Zoo, where Juniper, a Coastal Alaskan Brown Bear (Ursus arctos gyas), and Fern, a Montana Grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis), made appearances. Their long winter rest is ending. As they wake from torpor, it takes them weeks to fully adjust. They move slowly as they stretch, walk, and climb, almost as if in slow motion. The bears are getting used to their surroundings again and noticing what has changed over the winter. They look slimmer, having lost 15 to 30 percent of their weight. Their eating starts off slowly, since their digestive systems need time to handle a summer diet of up to 20,000 calories a day. (Credit Image: © Shane Srogi/ZUMA Press Wire)

Scott Mc Kiernan Presents zReportage.com Issue #1048 Story of the Week: Published TUESDAY July 28, 2026: ‘SILENT SURGE: Bundibugyo Ebola Threat’ by ZUMA Press award winning Xinhua photo-journalist Nie Zuguo: The current Ebola outbreak is the fastest-growing on record, primarily concentrated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where cases have surged to 3,262 with 1,437 confirmed deaths. Declared a Public Health Emergency by the World Health Organization, this outbreak reached the 1,000-death milestone nearly three times faster than the devastating 2014-2016 epidemic. Caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus and there are no approved vaccines and response teams must rely entirely on supportive care and strict isolation. Fighting involving local militias, Islamic rebels, and M23 fighters has triggered mass displacements and caused more than a dozen attacks on health workers. Deep-seated misinformation regarding isolation and safe burial practices has caused many sick individuals to avoid testing or to seek care only after becoming critically ill. The race is on to develop new vaccines and medical tools while operating under extreme security constraints in active war zones. Welcome to ‘SILENT SURGE: Bundibugyo Ebola Threat’
