Over the past eight months, the Chicago Tribune writers Darcel Rockett and Tina E. Akouris embarked on an in-depth examination of the journeys through Illinois of enslaved people who sought better lives for themselves. They visited the state’s Underground Railroad sites that aided in their escape, spoken to descendants of those freedom seekers, and delved into our archives. The resulting series depicts what life was like during a time when thousands of people made this pilgrimage in the hopes of finding freedom, and how their history ripples into the present day. Photographs with this story by Terrence Antonio James were made using an iPhone tintype filter. Welcome to: ‘Illinois UNDERGROUND RAILROAD’

Scott Mc Kiernan presents zReportage.com Story of the Week #905: TUESDAY September 12, 2023: ‘ADRIFT IN A SEA OF RED TAPE’ by photo-journalist Ximena Borrazas/SOPA

Migrants arriving on Italy’s shores has doubled this year. Meanwhile Italy’s new Prime Minister Meloni promised a firmer grasp on immigration. But her efforts have not slowed the arrivals. Forcing the government to ask for help from the very NGOs it has tried to stop in past. Yet, Rome’s broad anti-migration law remains the same. A controversial rule passed in February prevents rescue ships from carrying out consecutive operations. Resulting in grounding boats at a time when the country is struggling to handle increasing arrivals could sound counterintuitive to some, but others say it reflects the ongoing dispute between the rightwing coalition government led by Meloni and the NGOs. For example: Rome recently asked NGO Open Arms to help them with rescue operations for six migrant vessels – a situation many organizations called paradoxical.
