July 12, 2019 – Yerevan, Armenia – Lake Sevan is one of the largest mountainous lakes in Europe and Asia and is facing environmental problems. It sits in the middle of the Armenian Highland at an altitude of 1914 meters. An algae bloom is threatening to spread and is believed to have been caused by chemical and untreated waste, a draw down of water for agricultural and other uses, and an illegal catch of lake fish. Additionally plastic waste is in and around the lake along with litter from various sources. The government is trying to act quickly to remedy these problems.
