A Blast at Close Range

As protests spread globally during the days after the death of George Perry Floyd Jr. on May 25, at the hands of Minneapolis police, the riot police sadly worldwide handled the media and protests very poorly. A vivid example of both of this issues converging and strength of still photography to tell the story that needs to be told, is in the great work that ZUMA Press Dallas Bureau photojournalist CHRIS RUSANOWSKY, 30, father a newborn, did on Memorial Day weekend in Dallas covering otherwise very peaceful protests. The Dallas Morning News launched an investigation, after seeing his sequence of a police officer a few feet from a woman, who was obviously peacefully protesting, Chris caught the defining moment of Sgt. Rudloff aiming a weapon and unloading on her, hitting her in the breast. The woman, was wearing workout shorts, hair up in knot and on her cell phone at the time. Most likely not a treat. Not then or ever. 8:33 PM May 30th, 2020 is for ever dfrozen in time for her and all involved. The Dallas city council even discussed it at their meeting post riots with the police chief. To add to mishandling the police then detained Chris, despite clearly seeing his media credentials and acknowledging he is working press. The locked him up and many tense hours ensued for his fiancée and new mom, who caring for their new born, could not even go to jail, as roads were closed. Luckily all ended well for Chris, he got let go and got his gear back in one piece. The victim of the police excess force, Jantzen Verastique, 32, mom of two adopted black boys, survived the pepper-ball blast. The deep bruises are finally starting to succeed. She has numbness in her thumb and what sounds like PTSD , as she has flashbacks often, of the face of police officer behind the weapon, according the in-depth well done cover investigative story by Dallas Morning News, by Miles Moffeit, Cassandra Jaramilo and Dianne Solis on Sunday August 9, 2020 Sunday edition. “Proud of Chris staying with the story and being a consummate professional at ever stage of an out of control trying and scarey situation, especially when those who you expect to protect and serve you, become the aggressors. Truly telling a story that needs to be told!” – Scott Mc Kiernan, CEO/Founder ZUMA Press
